Strengthen our community and Washoe County School District collaborate on chronic absenteeism

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Washoe County School District, next to Strengthen our communityHe will provide an update to the community on chronic absenteeism on Thursday.

The discussion will focus mainly on the seven root causes identified for the rise of chronic absenteeism and how they plan to target each of them. One of the main goals of this collaboration is to place at least one community and school representative in every secondary school by the end of the next school year.

Chronic absenteeism has become one of the more serious and complex problems the Washoe County School District has to deal with. Typically, students cumulatively miss 1 to 2 months of school during a school year. But in many cases, children are missing out on so much more.

“Chronic Absenteeism is not a school district problem, it is a problem for all of us,” continued Mike Kazmierski, Executive Director of Strengthening Our Community.

The Washoe County School District and Strengthening Our Community are working to reduce chronic absenteeism in Washoe County schools to pre-pandemic levels by 2027.
