Police said a dispatcher dispatched officers to the community center in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive after receiving an “unusual transmission” on Officer Burks’ radio just after 10 p.m.

Staff Sergeant Jamie Farmer was the first to arrive on the scene and was met with gunfire from Cobb-Bey, who was armed with a 9mm pistol, a .22 caliber handgun and two shotguns.

Farmer returned fire before running toward the parking lot. Cobb-Bey retrieved his rifle and fired once, hitting Farmer in the leg.

Cobb-Bey then ran toward David’s vehicle, which was parked at the entrance to the parking lot, and began firing multiple shots as he exited the vehicle.

David returned fire but was shot in the face.

When the gunman began chasing the officers, the three injured officers were taken to the hospital, where Burks was pronounced dead.

While David’s condition was initially stated to be stable but critical, Farmer was reportedly treated for his injuries and discharged the next day.

David, who recently married his wife Josh, is expected to be admitted to hospital again soon for “major surgery”.

The family has raised nearly $84,000, which will be used to pay for renovations to the newlyweds’ home and equipment to help David with his vision loss.
