Passenger dies after horse shatters windshield in Southern California highway crash

NORCO, Calif. — A passenger in a vehicle was killed when a horse shattered the windshield in a series of crashes on a Southern California highway over the weekend, authorities said.

The first collision occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday when a Toyota Tacoma pulling a horse trailer turned right on northbound Interstate 15 near Norco and hit a guardrail, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The trailer broke in half, throwing the horse onto the highway. A semi-trailer tractor then crashed into the horse trailer.

The horse reached the median but then tried to cross the interstate and was struck by a black Honda Accord, highway patrol officer Javier Navarro said. Southern California News Group.

A gray Honda Accord then hit the horse, which shattered the vehicle’s windshield, Navarro said. The front seat passenger, a 25-year-old man, died. The horse also died.

The news agency reported that the 27-year-old driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries.

Navarro said no arrests had been made Monday. He said an investigation was underway into what caused the Toyota, which was pulling a horse trailer, to hit the barrier.
