Sovereign Northville returns to top of KLAA girls golf

Northville wins KLAA postseason girls golf tournament to cap dominant league season

BRIGHTON — Northville’s dominance of KLAA girls golf was put on hold last season, but there’s no end in sight with the Mustangs back on top.

Northville shot 302 Tuesday in the postseason tournament at Kensington Metropark Golf Course to win the KLAA for the sixth time in the last seven years.

The Mustangs, who shot .312 in the preseason tournament, won the combined tournament by beating title holder Brighton by 64 strokes.

Brighton snapped Northville’s championship streak last year when the Mustangs finished third in the league. Brighton finished second by one stroke in the state Division I tournament.

Northville has rebuilt itself with an infusion of freshman talent combined with some key returning seniors that have the Mustangs aiming to return to state supremacy. They were Division I champions four years in a row from 2018-21.

“We have two new freshmen and upperclassmen with a lot of experience,” Northville assistant coach Trish Murray said. “They really gelled very, very well. The bar was raised. They set the bar high.”

One of those freshmen, McKenzie Stevens, took the KLAA by storm. Stevens won the preseason tournament with a 75 and tied for first place with senior teammate Sanya Singhal in the postseason tournament with a 73 to win the all-around medal.

Fellow freshman Cam Baker finished fourth in the KLAA standings with 161 points.

“We heard they were coming,” Murray said. “The tryouts went really well. They have a great resume with a lot of tournament experience. That’s what you want, kids who have played in tough tournaments and can take advantage of this opportunity.”

The Mustangs earned top-five points in both tournaments, with Plymouth junior Annie Flavin tying for fifth place.

Singhal finished second with 150 points, sophomore Naaz Gill finished third with 156 points and junior Serena Ku tied for fifth with 162 points.
