SAP Labs India: Leading Global AI Innovations

SAP Labs India, the largest R&D centre for German software maker SAP outside its headquarters, is focused on driving global AI innovation from here. Plans to open a large new campus in Bengaluru are on track, confirmed Chief Executive Officer Sindhu Gangadharan.

The company’s expansion drive involves building a new campus in Bengaluru in three phases. The first phase will require a capital expenditure of ₹80 million and is expected to be completed by Q2 2025.

Gangadharan highlighted that AI and generative AI are accelerating a business transformation, enabling companies to use cutting-edge technology to redesign customer experiences and processes. He noted that India, with its talent and skill set, has the potential to lead AI innovations globally.

SAP Labs India focuses on Custom AI and multi-agent AI technology to drive the next wave of business transformation for its customers.

Gangadharan highlighted that SAP Labs India is SAP’s largest R&D centre outside its headquarters, with 40 per cent of its global R&D workforce located in India.

The company is committed to building world-class innovation by employing 15,600 professionals in India, 13,600 of whom are focused on core R&D. Bengaluru remains the company’s largest hub, with offices in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Pune and Hyderabad.

Gangadharan, who was recently appointed as the chairman of the IT industry’s apex body NASSCOM, expressed excitement over India’s technology-led growth, supported by solid numbers and a strong talent pool.

Citing industry estimates that AI will create an impact of around USD 3.4-4 trillion on the global economy in the coming years, he said India has a unique edge in leading AI innovation.

SAP Labs India’s proprietary AI and multi-agent AI innovations are improving business operations by enabling advanced interactions and decision-making capabilities, driving value and competitive advantage on a global scale.

The new 41.06-acre campus will house approximately 15,000 employees when completed. The first phase is expected to be ready in the second quarter of 2025.
