WAHPETON, N.D. — After a perfect regular season, the West Fargo Sheyenne girls golf team showed no signs of slowing down on Monday.

The Mustangs, who are 9 for 9 in tournament team championships this fall, won their first East Region tournament title by beating runner-up Wahpeton by 16 strokes at Bois de Sioux Golf Course.

Sheyenne finished with a 318 total to finish at 34-over par for the district team title. Mustangs junior Payton Stocker won the individual crown by defeating Grand Forks Red River junior Ella Speidel in a two-hole playoff. Speidel and Stocker finished the 18-hole round with 6-over 77.

The Sheyenne, Wahpeton, Red River, West Fargo, West Fargo Horace and Fargo North teams rounded out the top six, qualifying for next week’s Class A state tournament, which will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Prairie West Golf Club in Mandan.

The Mustangs’ 318 were followed by the Huskies’ 334. The Roughriders were third with 338, the Packers fourth with 353, the Hawks fifth with 372 and the Spartans sixth with 375.

Leading Sheyenne’s performance alongside Stocker’s 77 were third-grader Zoe Keene with a score of 78, fourth-grader Adi Houkom with a personal best score of 79 and sophomores Ava Keene and Julia Melhus with scores of 84.

Zoe Keene finished third in the individual competition behind Stocker and Speidel, while Houkom finished fourth. Rose Solberg of Fargo Davies finished fifth with a 9-over 80.

Senior London Nordick led Wahpeton in sixth place individually with a shot of 82. She followed senior teammate Halle Miller, junior teammate Claire Langenwalter and West Fargo senior Avery Hovland in a three-way tie for seventh place, all shooting 83.

Five players, including golfers Ava Keene and Melhus, Red River junior Lauren Soholt and senior Sophie Brakke, and Fargo South sophomore Brynn Korbl, tied for 10th place with a score of 84 and rounded out All-Region honors.

Brakke, who hit an ace on the 12th hole, was also named the East Region Senior Athlete of the Year. Sheyenne head coach Dan Wolf was named the East Region Coach of the Year.
