La Jolla High Wins America’s Best City Tournament – San Diego Union-Tribune

La Jolla’s three boys water polo teams achieved success in swimming last weekend, while La Jolla High School defeated five other schools to win the America’s Finest City Tournament and La Jolla Country Day and Bishop’s also won their matches.

La Jolla High School goes 5-0 in tournament

The Vikings defeated Ventura, Bonita, Westview, Menlo and Rio Americano to win the America’s Finest City Tournament in Coronado, their third tournament of the season — only four of their 18 games so far have not been played in the tournament.

In the America’s Finest City finals, La Jolla narrowly defeated Rio Americano of Sacramento, 12-10. The Vikings finished fourth after losing to the Raiders at the Scott Roche Invitational in Atherton two weeks ago.

La Jolla won the America’s Best City Tournament as well as the Long Beach Tournament in late August.

For the season, senior Liam Flanagan was the leading goal scorer, with La Jolla head coach Tom Atwell adding that seniors Jackson Loyd, Trevor Kula, Aiden Flanagan and AJ Schoenberger all made big contributions. Senior goalie Jackson Brown and junior Jake Nielsen did a “great job” of splitting time in net, Atwell said.

After a strong 2023 season in which it went 21-7 and earned a top-10 ranking in California, La Jolla (15-3) lost to eventual champion Cathedral Catholic in the semifinals of the CIF San Diego Section Open Division playoffs.

The Vikings will open Western League play with a road game against Coronado (3-9) on Wednesday, September 25 at 4:00 p.m.

La Jolla Country Day 17, San Marcos 15

After an 0-4 start to the season, Country Day has won its last three games, most recently beating San Marcos at home on Sept. 19.

The match against San Marcos was tightly contested from start to finish, with the Torreys winning in overtime.

Earlier last week, the Torreys won their first City League game of the season at home against High Tech, 15-11. It was a rematch of last year’s Division III championship game, which Country Day won 8-3.

Country Day (3-4) will play their next match at home against Mission Bay (3-6) on September 25 at 4:00 p.m.

Bishop 13, Mater Dei 9

The Knights, who were seeded 11th in the 32-team South Coast Tournament held in Orange County the previous week, defeated Mater Dei at home on Sept. 21.

Senior Charlie Martin, the team’s leading goal scorer this season, and freshman Hanrui Liu each scored two goals in the game for Bishop’s.

Along with star goalie Jaxon Leach, who graduated last spring and now plays NCAA Division I water polo at Pepperdine University, the Knights rotate sophomores Luke Spiro and Adrian Revenco in goal.

“This is a pretty solid start to the season,” head coach Doug Peabody said. “A hard-working young group that will continue to improve throughout the season and see if they can be competitive in the Western League and beyond.”

Bishop’s (7-3) next plays at home on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. against Cathedral Catholic (7-2). Cathedral Catholic won last season’s Open League championship and defeated the Knights in the South Coast Tournament this year.
