TEAM OF THE WEEK

Arrowhead

Merton Township has become a hot spot for volleyball in recent seasons. On the boys’ side, the Warhawks have made two straight state volleyball championship appearances. The girls could be ready to make their own move to the Resch Center this season. The Warhawks earned this week’s team of the week honors after an impressive 8-1 week, only to fall in three sets to two-time state champion DSHA in the Charger Challenge championship match last weekend. The Warhawks not only went 6-0 in the tournament before losing to the Dashers, but also picked up a key Classic 8 Conference victory over fellow title contender Mukwonago (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) to improve to 4-0 in conference play. Four Warhawks have recorded over 85 kills this season, led by Myla Unterweger’s 152. Taylor Wold and Samantha Durand have combined for 436 assists this season. The Warhawks haven’t made it to state since winning the Division I title in 2019. With this talented group, that drought could be over.

SOON

New Berlin Eisenhower in Pewaukee, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.: In the biggest game of the season in Woodland West, the Lions travel to Pewaukee on Tuesday night where the 4-0 programs will face off. The Pirates are off to a 4-0 start in conference play, winning each of those four games. As for Eisenhower, their six-game winning streak ended last weekend in tournament play against Grafton. It’s a big comeback opportunity for the visitors in the championship race.

At DSHA Brookfield Central, Tuesday at 7 p.m.: The No. 1 team in the state is the best team in the state and is playing like a two-time Division I state champion. The Dashers travel to Brookfield for a Greater Metro Conference matchup against a solid Brookfield Central team looking to hand the defending champions their first upset this season. DSHA is coming off another tournament title last weekend, winning the 32-team Charger Challenge and has won 35 straight games since last season.

Wauwatosa East vs. Brookfield East, Tuesday at 7 p.m.: In another important GMC matchup this week, the Red Raiders will travel to Brookfield on Tuesday to face the Spartans. The Spartans improved to 12-4 with two wins last week. The conference is competitive with Brookfield Central (3-0), Sussex Hamilton (3-0) and DSHA (2-0) at the top, all of whom are excellent. The Spartans can’t afford to get stuck here if they want to stay on pace with the other teams in the championship race.

Waupun to Kewaskum, Thursday at 18:45: Kewaskum is the only undefeated team in the East Central Conference standings this season other than Winneconne (3-0), but will have its hands full at home Thursday against conference opponent Waupun. The home team won both meetings against the visitors last season, one in conference play and one in tournament play. It’s a vital matchup for Kewaskum to remain near the top of the ECC standings.

West Bend West in Grafton, Thursday at 7 p.m.: There are two undefeated teams in the North Shore standings, and Grafton lost to one of them in five sets at Slinger on Sept. 12. For the Black Hawks, they will have to eliminate a competitive West Bend West side on Thursday, who are on pace with teams like the Owls and Homestead, at 8-9 overall but a perfect 3-0 in NSC play this season. Another victory could also come for the Spartans, who have tournament victories over Brookfield East, Homestead and Oconomowoc this season.
