Alcaraz breaks silence on Federer comparisons after Laver Cup win

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz in three sets to become the Team Europe Laver Cup 2024 champion.

Accordingly SporkeedaAlcaraz helped Team Europe lift the trophy for the first time since 2011 by defeating Frtiz 6-2, 7-5 in a thrilling singles match on Sunday, September 22.

“We’ve all done pretty well over the course of the day, I mean, and it’s been a really high-level job. I’d say we almost lost. But Sascha came in with some really good tennis, you know, to give me a chance to win the Laver Cup. So I think we’re really happy with the whole thing,” the 21-year-old said after winning the final.

The 2024 Wimbledon and French Cup champion was asked how he felt when his teammates compared him to tennis legend Roger Federer and called him ‘Fed05’ in reference to the former Swiss player’s peak period.

The four-time Grand Slam winner replied: “I am far from that level. I hope I reach it one day. But it will be impossible. They need to change my name because Fed 05 (Roger Federer) will be there forever.”

Federer announced his retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup after helping Team Europe win three consecutive trophies between 2017 and 2019.
