Springfield Community Gardens receives grant from Cox North to distribute food to those in need

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Nonprofit Springfield Community Gardens A new program aimed at reducing the amount of food wasted is set to launch in Springfield.

The nonprofit received a $38,317 grant from Solid Waste Management District O to take uneaten food from Cox North Hospital and add it to its weekly distribution to help those in need.

“We have a really good relationship with Cox and they’re really good at reducing their waste. And so when we found out there was an opportunity to bring the two together, it just naturally happened that this was the perfect opportunity to do it,” said Shanna Borthick of Springfield Community Gardens.

The program will also support the University of Missouri’s 4H program. Students will help separate and portion food. The goal is to educate them about food waste and giving back to the community.

The program will run over a two-year period and support the creation of a pilot program that transports and delivers prepared foods from the Cox North Hospital cafeteria line to food-insecure households through SCG’s existing weekly produce distributions, according to the nonprofit.
